Chasing Plastic eNews #2

Hello all,

In this issue we've got tourney highlights from Hold Back the Snow, Canadian University Ultimate Championships, and the UPA Club Championships in Sarasota. We've got a last reminder about our Mexico Vacation Give-away. We also have a new jersey now available on our web site.

And this time the links will even work.

Disc Shattering Cold - Winnipeg, MB
Down-filled parkas and fleece were essential items for the ultimate crowd in Manitoba in October. With temperatures that rarely struggled above the freezing mark two major tournaments were held on the same weekend in 'Winter'peg.

The Canadian University Ultimate Championships took place over three days. The Mixed division final pitted U Manitoba against Queens U, with the local squad winning 15-5. A very strong U Alberta soundly defeated U Manitoba 13-1 for the Womens division crown. The Open final was a much tighter match, with Queens U taking the win over U Alberta 15-10.

Hold Back the Snow, the largest Juniors tournament held in Canada, occurred across town and it had an international flavor.
In the Middle School division the team from Island Pacific School (Bowen Island, BC) defeated the Seattle Country Day School (Seattle, WA) squad 15-5. Island Pacific claimed double happiness by winning the Spirit Award as well.
MUT from Memorial High School (Madison, WI) met the Calgary G-Men (Calgary, AB) in the High School division final, with Calgary winning 17-7. The Spirit Award winner in this division was Vincent Massey Collegiate (Winnipeg, MB).
The tournament was not quite true to its name this year; there were brief snow squalls during both division finals.

And yes, in these sub-zero conditions one team did manage to shatter a disc because of the cold.

2002 UPA Club Championships - Sarasota, FL
The show is done for another year. After nearly 80 qualifier tournaments and 4 days of battle in Sarasota the 2002 champions have been named.

Masters Division
Old and in the Way (Boulder) beat up Ironwood (Phoenix - Burbank) and then toughed it out against Kavu (Big Sky) to again reach the big match.
Old SAG (Philly) knocked off Chronic (Chicago) and then Skeleton Crew (Florida) to meet the other "Old" crew in the final.
The final was tight, but Old SAG persevered and took a 17-14 win.
Notables
- An east-west final match-up was inevitable when the playoffs accidentally split into east and west (with Cranky of NC stuck on the western draw).
- Steve Mooney (part of DoG's long standing dynasty) made his first Masters appearance, helping Old and in the Way into the finals.

Open Division
Ring of Fire (Raleigh) took down Johnny Bravo (Boulder) and then Sockeye (Seattle) on the way to their first final appearance.
Furious George (Vancouver) dismantled Sub Zero (Minneapolis) and then battled with DoG (Boston) to make it to the big game.
This was a very exciting final with big plays made by both teams. A dominating 7-0 run in the middle of the game by Furious led them to victory, 17-12.
Notables
- The Worlds final rematch, DoG vs. Condors, occurred in the quarters.
- In the Furious - DoG semi there were only five turn-overs.
- A trio of young rippers, just 19 years old, proved their worth and received plenty of play time throughout the championships. Derek Alexander and Oscar Pottinger played for Furious, while Josh Ziperstein was with DoG.

Mixed Division
Donner Party (Tahoe) ate the Smelts (Portland, ME) and then NW rival Shazam (Seattle) on their way to Sunday play.
Hang Time (Dallas) ran away from High Plains Drifters (Denver) and shot down Spear (Raleigh) to make the final.
Another showdown between these squads, this game was much closer than the Worlds contest but Donner Party again triumphed 19-18.
Notables
- Donner Party is the only team to follow up a Worlds victory with a UPA Championship win.

Womens Division
Fury (San Francisco) fought off Nemesis (Chicago) and then Riot (Seattle) for a final berth.
Lady Godiva (Boston) eliminated Lady Condors (Santa Barbara) and then Ozone (Atlanta) to advance.
A final thrilling final, this game went to double game point as the sun went down, and Godiva's winning streak prevailed, 17-16.
Notables
- For the third time in as many tournaments, Ozone came from behind in the quarters to push Schwa out of contention, mirroring the Worlds semifinal and last year's UPA quarterfinal result.
- Riot suffered through three lengthy games that went to double game point, one each against Fury, Rare Air, and Schwa.
