e-News #4

Greetings everyone,

In this issue you'll find the first look at the premiere Chasing Plastic Magazine issue of 2003, we've got a report from New Years Fest in Tempe, and there are a pair of new posters for sale. Ultimate is back in full swing so in upcoming issues we'll get reports from Kaimana, President's Day and WUFF Coed Nationals.

New Issue
Finally going to print is the first issue of 2003. Here's a peak at the cover, more to come in the next few weeks.

Space Jam in Tempe - Tempe, AZ
New Years Fest marks the unofficial beginning of the club touring season. This year's affair in Tempe brought the usual suspects together, players from all over the continent ready to broil in the Arizona heat and scrape skin off their bodies. The Tempe fields are dreaded for their cheese grater-like qualities, but after a couple ultimate free months the pain is worth it to get back to the game.

The conditions were as expected, overly hot and sunny but the stronger wind this year was more of a factor.

In the Open draw Jam knocked off Sockeye in quarters and then battled Thermonuke, a San Diego/So Cal squad, to advance. Voltron, a sort of college all star squad all decked out in space gear, stunned Mamabird in a quarter and then zapped ZippO, a Bravo and Condors mix, to head to the big match. Jam went up fast in the final, but Voltron rallied when they donned their space suits and made the score respectable. The final was filled with big entertainment, from the plays on the field to the raucous antics of the crowd. Jam eventually repelled the alien invaders with a 17-12 win.

The Womens division had Hedwig and the Angry Hick, a nine player Ozone/eastern squad, beating Rodeehos from Tucson in quarters and then taking down CLITS, a Northwest squad, to move on to the final. Suck'n'Bomb, a Condors/Safari mix so named for their on field beverage of choice, dispatched E-wo, a Tufts alum team, in a quarter and Gy, a Carleton alum based crew, in the semi to make the show. There was more amusement in the Womens final: imagine a gal losing her wig while completing a lay out Callahan score in pleather plants and little black vest. Hedwig took the game convincingly, winning 15-8.

Arizona in January with a get-together like this seems a perfect cure for winter.
Apologies for the cheesy title; thanks to Daisy for the Tempe info.
