e-News
#7
Greetings
for 2004,
I
realize sending out an eNews while email systems strain under
the weight of another nefarious virus isn't ideal, but the
news must be delivered!
In this issue you'll find results from the Santa Barbara Invite,
a mention of the University of Colorado Ultimate Scholarship,
an easy winter training tip to improve your throwing (with
exception to the southern hemisphere, where we'll call it
a mid-season training tip), an announcement of the Canadian
Junior Team coaches, and the biggest January news everyone's
been waiting for: we're having our annual poster and photo
print sale!

Berkeley
shines at the Santa Barbara Invite
The
Santa Barbara Invite informally starts the college ultimate
season. The 2004 tourney could have gone smoother-there was
questionable seeding and an odd cross-over format in addition
to fields and field food that could be classified as only
medium. Nonetheless the teams suffered through and played
(with the exception of Brigham Young University, a Mormon
school that doesn't play on Sunday.)
In
the Womens division, the quarterfinals had UC-Berkeley edge
UC-Santa Cruz, Stanford knock off UC-Los Angeles, UC-San Diego
down host UC-Santa Barbara, and UC-Davis dispatch Claremont
College.
In semis Davis overcame Stanford for a 12-9 win. Berkeley
brought some zone defense to help them over UCSD and advance
to the final.
The first half of the Womens final was close between Davis
and Berkeley, but in the end the Berkeley Pie Queens took
the win with a 12-9 victory.
The
Open division quarters had UC-Berkeley (Cal) knock off Cal
Poly (SLO Core), U British Columbia down UC San Diego, UC-Santa
Barbara eliminate UC-Santa Cruz, and Stanford defeat UC-Davis.
The semis saw Cal overcome UBC, while UCSB sent Stanford packing.
In the final, Berkeley was up 14-12 over UCSB in a game to
15 when they let the Santa Barbara boys back in. After the
decision was made to not cap the match, the two teams battled
until Cal finally finished the game 20-18.
UC
Berkeley went home with all the prizes, a good start to 2004
for Cal and the Pie Queens.

Winter
Wrist Work-Out
The
forearm and hand muscles are essential to transferring power
from your legs, torso and arms to the disc in a throw. They
control the point of contact with the plastic, and need to
be tuned up to facilitate the balanced motion necessary for
a perfect throw. While we sit and think about warmer climates
or the upcoming ultimate season, two basic exercises together
can improve these muscles, which in turn should help our throwing.
Squeezing a tennis ball or racquet ball will help tone these
muscles. Increased strength is not the goal, but rather speed
and control of muscles is. After warming up the muscles by
squeezing the ball through a set of 12 to 15 reps, do 3 to
5 sets contracting your muscles (squeezing the ball) quickly,
and then slowly releasing.
Reverse wrist curls is a second exercise which will be beneficial
to your full-field huck. With your palms facing down, curl
a dumbbell through the entire range of your wrist motion with
the knuckles facing up. Do reps and sets like with the ball,
concentrating on speed after warming up the muscles. Use a
weight which allows you to complete all your sets in proper
form.
A quick disclaimer: a qualified trainer or physician will
give you the best advice on how to work out and avoid injury
but speed work on your grip and forearm will be beneficial,
in addition to your regular workout regimen. Of course, I'm
just some guy sitting at a computer thinking of 95-yard flicks
