Columns & Departments: Player Profile

Advice to younger players: "Take advantage of the traveling opportunities ultimate will create...and play ultimate for the 'game' it is."

There are two distinct Damien Scotts that have become all too familiar to the ultimate world over the last 7 years – each establishing him as one of the most unique people you’ll meet in ultimate.

The first Damien I came to know was the one I’d see at a party with a crowd of curious onlookers circling around one of the many stupid ‘timate’ games he’s brilliantly invented over the years. If you haven’t heard of Turkimate, 7 foot Beertimate, Doppio Cantimate, Nolaughtimate, 7 mph Winetimate, or Mcresitimate, then you’ve missed a side of Damien that’s almost as fun to watch as his on-field show. The on-field show is what separates him from the pack. This second Damien is the one that will outrun, outjump, outthink, and outclass anyone who marks up against him.

This second Damien is the one that will outrun, outjump, outthink, and outclass anyone who marks up against him.

I've played against Damien on numerous occasions and he's by far the most complete athlete I've seen in ultimate. What impresses me about Damien is how unassuming he is: he quietly dominates the game in every aspect imaginable yet refuses to let anyone know about it through tasteless arrogance. But what impresses me most is his sportsmanship.

"I've never seen him argue a call or lose his temper even in the most pressure packed situations," says Jam teammate Idris Nolan. "He's a calming presence on our team because he works so hard for someone with so much talent, which inspires a lot of guys.”

Damien began playing with San Francisco's Jam after 2 years with the exciting Houston Houndz and 4 years with Rice University as a standout Callahan nominee. Since then Jam has steadily improved, most recently reaching the final of the UPA Championships. I have no doubt in my mind that Damien’s presence on the team and Jam’s steady climb up the ranks isn't just a coincidence.

Favorite tourneys and memories:
"The Paganello World Beach Ultimate Championships is by far my favorite tourney, with Kaimana Klassik being a close second. My favorite memory to date is placing 12th in the World Freestyle Championships while at Paganello, but my proudest moment was when I was selected to the US World Games team that competed in Akita, Japan last summer.”

Damien is one of the sports premier players and is an excellent ambassador of the honor system known as spirit of the game. If you haven’t had the chance to see or meet him you’d better do it soon, because there are always rumors of his retirement looming…
