Tune-Up '01

Naperville, Illinois

This is the big one. This is the only tourney I've been at where I didn't mind just watching and shooting. Nearly all the top teams were here to tune up for the UPA Fall Series, and the play was brilliant. The biggest difficulty was scheduling where I should be shooting. Which game do you choose, the DoG v. Sub Zero, or the Sockeye v. CBass matchup? At the same time that these are going on Riot is meeting Ozone and Rare Air is meeting Backhoe. The geographic gap between these teams dictate that you will rarely see these matches repeated in any given year. If you ever attend a tourney just to watch, this one ranks up as high as the UPA Championships.

As for the tourney itself, it was done right. Cola and crew had everything under control. The polo grounds are large enough to accommodate the 86 teams; the field food didn't last with this many people, but that's a tough job, really. There was even enough time scheduled to work around a rain delay. Oh yeah the rain. Check image #51 to see how bad it got. Notables were the big field side pasta dinner Saturday night, with the prerequisite kegs, and Cups was introduced to a whole bunch of people who had never seen it played. Also, Mr. and Mrs. Callahan, parents of the late Henry Callahan, were in attendance to watch some games.
