The oldest ulti tourney in the world was a pretty big draw
for me. A flurry of outgoing emails searching for road warriors
had produced only poor excuses until Silent Bob answered the
call. Once again I zipped down to Minny, caught up with Silent
Bob, and we started our journey to stop the Hollywood types
from making a lame-ass movie about us.
Right.
We were underway, me exhausted and Silent Bob working on his
inexperience with the stick shift.
"Is it in gear?" inquires Bob.
"Yeah."
"WHOA, it's in third!"
"I didn't say WHICH gear."
Nevertheless, a leisurely 19 hour sprint brought us to Mindy's
place in DC, where we were kindly taken in at 3 AM.
This
tourney has been going on for a long time; many of the squads
are alumni and reunion teams. Everyone's got a little character
and history to bring to it, and the silver anniversary edition
seemed like a celebration. The skill level was excellent,
and the three day format means you get reseeded into a bracket
where all your games are close. I got to play with the Lower
Canada Racquet and Lawn Bowling Club and had plenty of opportunities
to wear myself out by the end of the weekend. I found it mildly
amusing, driving half way across the US, and then picking
up with one of the few canuck squads.
There
were many notables: a cold persistent wind, shots of Jagermeister
in a casual little pub completely swarmed after the party,
Ben of Peggy Cronin leading 'spin the bottle' in the hotel
lobby, the Toronto gals and Karaoke, candy necklaces, Gra-du
in fine form Friday night, the Cheese Dick's 25 shots a game
diet. Also, I don't like to be critical, but I must say it's
poor planning to run out of beer by 11:30 at the party. Something
to think about next year.
